The facilitators

Bernie

Hi! I'm Bernie, a serial hobbyist, learning enthusiast, self-taught creative, coder, all-around nerd, PhD drop out and a facilitator here at the ACLC. The common thread throughout my life is a deep love for learning new things. I've taken courses in sewing, woodwork, languages, science, plastering, screen-printing, upholstery, graphic design, plumbing, beekeeping, and "building a tiny home," just to name a few. My formal academic journey has been just as varied, covering subjects like Sociology, Physics, Philosophy, Politics, Maths, International Relations, History, and Economics.

I've studied at a diverse range of universities, including Leeds, Manchester, The Open University, Sciences Po (in Rennes, France), and The Center for Alternative Technology. I've also attended coding bootcamps, academies, language centers, building colleges, community courses, maker spaces, learning retreats and the Recurse Center in New York. Over the years, I've picked up a few spoken languages—mostly French and Spanish, though I've dabbled in others—and coding languages too. I've coded professionally in TypeScript, Rust, Elixir, and Go, and very unprofessionally in many others. Each of these experiences has taught me something valuable about creating the ideal environment for learning.

Throughout this continuous learning journey, I've discovered a passion for teaching and mentorship, which I see as an integral part of learning itself. I've taught at university, led afterschool clubs, and taken on various mentorship roles. My idea of a holiday is attending a workshop or course to learn something new. After struggling to find a place where I could intensively learn less conventional skills (instruments, photography, and video editing are next on my list), I founded the ACLC in 2024 to create a nurturing space for interesting and kind people to explore their natural curiosity.
